Welcome everyone to the Musical Theater Appreciation Club here at Hogwarts...which shall be dubbed MTAC until someone comes up with a better nickname.Well, I have never maintained a community before or even participated in a club at Hogwarts_Elite, so this is all new to me. Please put up with all the stupid things I'll probably do.So, on with the show...What's this club for? Discussing musical theater of course! West End, Broadway, local productions, cast recordings...we don't discriminate.Just to get the ball rolling, I have a survey for all new members to fill out:Name:House:Favorite musicals:Favorite composers:Favorite songs:Are you a performer/stagehand/whatever?How did you get into musical theater? What is your favorite thing about musical theater?Best musical theater experience?Name: MandyHouse: HufflepuffFavorite musicals: The Last 5 Years, Les Miserables, Sweeney Todd, Floyd Collins, Into the Woods, A New Brain, Guys and Dolls....basically anything except Wicked.Favorite composers: Stephen Sondheim, Jason Robert Brown, Adam GuettelFavorite songs: Anything from any of my favorite musicals, but other than that I love "I'd Give it All For You" from Songs for a New World, "Poor Sweet Baby" from Snoopy, the Musical and "The I Love You Song" from The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling BeeAre you a performer/stagehand/whatever? Just a deep appreciator of musical theater, plus a bit of a critic. How did you get into musical theater? I fell in love with the cast recording for Guys and Dolls when I was 8. The rest is history. What is your favorite thing about musical theater? I love the songs. I love seeing shows, of course, but I can be just happy with a cast recording. A well-crafted musical theater song is not only a pretty tune, but a great character study and/or plot device.Best musical theater experience: Seeing Dirty Rotten Scoundrels in previews in San Diego and getting to meet Joanna Gleason and Sherie Rene Scott. Seeing Norbert Leo Butz, my all time favorite performer, in person for the first time was the highlight of the day though.Alright...let's have some fun!
aw, why the Wicked hate?
Ah, yes, I do realize that I'm the only one in the world with the problems with Wicked. It's really not my thing. The music is a bit synthesized for me (going off the cast recording), and some of the lyrics really make me wince. I also find the happy moral to the story of "I've been changed for the good since I've known you" to just be sort of corny. Eh, I just find the whole thing corny. Don't worry...I'm used to being disagreed with about this. ;)
I'm not trying to start an arguement, really...but :)"I've been changed for good since I've known you" isn't the moral of the story. The real moral is that there are two sides to everything, and sometimes you have to look at things from a different point of view to get the real truth from things. "For Good" just happens to be a song in the show :).Have you seen the show, or have you just heard the music? Because there's a lot more to the story than just the music, I promise :)
Yeah, I saw a, erm, not so legal version. I know, I know...but I still just find it so corny. I don't know, it really just rubs me wrong. It's one of those shows that I really wanted to like because of the strong cast, but then just felt it fell so flat. If you want a really, really good musical about seeing both sides to a story, look at The Last 5 Years. I gotta pimp that show to everybody...but really, it's so great. Sorry if you know this already, but it's about a five year relationship between two people. The man starts at the beginning of the story and moves forward, while the woman starts at the end of the relationship and moves backwards. It's brilliant, and the music is just so good. It doesn't make any judgement calls on either of the characters, just tells you the story and lets you make your own decision. I feel like Wicked doesn't do that, which is one of the reasons I don't like it.
I've heard that L5Y is fantastic. I really, really want to see it (mostly because I'm a musical h0r). Wicked does make the characters somewhat stereotypical...but in the end, none of them fit into their stereotypes. I'm sorry you don't like it...I honestly think it's one of the best shows out there. But, c'est la vie! I've gotten very, very weird looks whenever I tell people how much I hate Cats.Ooooh...was your "not so legal version" the one where there's all blackness through Dancing Through Life, or another version?
I think it didn't have blackness, but unfortunately it wasn't mine, otherwise I'd pass it on. I saw it on a friend's comp, but I don't think they have it anymore. :/ Sorry! And, ewwwww Cats! I have to admit I liked it as a kid, but now....ughhhh.
It's ok :) I'm not in major need of a Wicked fix, anyway :)Cats = teh evil. It may have been because I had hurt my knee and there was no intermission and the seats were way too close and I couldn't stretch my leg, but I think a really, really good show could have made me forget about the pain :)Norbie!Sherie love! Agh!!! They're too cute.
Its actually not as corny as the music makes it sound.. there's alot more to it than the soundtrack lets on (in my opinion)... but to each her own... and i <3 your icon
Yay Arrested Development! I <3 Buster. :)
too bad fox sucks
I can't believe they cancelled it. :(It would call for a full-blown Fox boycott if:a) I wasn't in England this year and therefore not having Fox on TV to boycottb) They didn't still have House and Simpsons, two of my other favorite shows.
I agree...House is their only redeaming quality in my eyes
but .. but ;_; ... wicked... why?
Look at the comment to adelrya's post. :)
